Beginner finally gets some luck

Jacoby takes Round 1; Marchi and Lostroh cover

ONTARIO, Calif. (September 27, 2009) - First-year rider Elliott Jacoby got what he desperately needed Saturday night.

He made just the second qualified ride of his BFTS career – an 88.75-point effort in the first out of the Dickies Invitational.

It was enough for him to win the opening round in Ontario, Calif., but with Kody Lostroh and Guilherme Marchi both starting off the 28th Built Ford Tough Series event of 2009 with qualified rides of their own, Jacoby became a secondary storyline.

Marchi moved 156.5 points closer to No. 2 J.B. Mauney, while Lostroh extended his lead by another 130.5 points.

Lostroh capped off the round with an 85.5 on Shaggy, which was good for a tie with Mike Lee for 6th and 7th in the round. His qualified score coupled with 45 bonus points gave the Colorado cowboy a total of 130.5 points.

“This is what you want to see him do,” said Michael Gaffney, during the Versus broadcast of Round 1.

Although Lostroh’s injury was the most talked about storyline, he had little issue with either his shoulder or his elbow. Lostroh later told Versus broadcaster Leah Garcia that earlier this week he went to visit Gary Leffew, who corrected a technical issue he felt was affecting the outcome of his effort.

“I got away from driving with my shoulder,” said Lostroh, who added that Leffew “saw it within five minutes and corrected it. … The proof is in the pudding.”

Marchi finished fourth among 15 qualified rides with an 86.5 on Hank.

The defending World Champion is coming off just his second BFTS event win of 2009 and said that his “confidence is back.”

With one long round left, Lostroh and Marchi are in a solid position to make it back to the championship round, while Mauney, who drew Oloomana Ivory in Round 2, will not only need to make the whistle, but he’ll need a score in the mid-to-high 80s to give himself a chance to make it back on one.

Lostroh and Marchi drew Devil’s Night and Crazy Carl respectively.

At the other end of the spectrum, the round win couldn’t have come at a better time for Jacoby.

The Texas native has had a tough go of it since making his way to the BFTS. He’s now made just two rides in eight events. However, more importantly, the $2,730 he earned for the round will move him from the 47th to the 45th spot in the Qualifier Standings for the Finals. But he’s still more than $6,500 shy of qualifying for a trip to Vegas.

Rounding out the Top 5 are Dustin Elliott (88.5), Kasey Hayes (87), Marchi and Rocky McDonald (86).

The event will conclude Sunday afternoon with Round 2 followed by the championship round at 2 p.m. PT, and will air on Versus beginning at 7 p.m. ET.

Junior say-ouch:
Known as one of the most fierce linebackers in the NFL, the recently retired Junior Seau was at the event working as one of the Dickies Durabullfighters. About two-thirds of the way through the opening round, the 12-time Pro Bowler got hit from behind and run over. Afterward he asked Shorty Gorham what happened. Gorham replied, “Well, your feet locked up.” Seau was in Ontario filming an episode of his new TV series “Sports Jobs with Junior Seau.” The PBR episode is expected to air Dec. 2 on Versus.

Hey Brittany....maybe you should stop and think about what was going thru Elliot's head when all that was happening. You could tell from the video that he was having a hard time and maybe his chickens were a little scattered. Elliot is not a rude person, and I don't think its ok for you to say maybe he should get hurt a few more times. Elliot had a bad accident this summer at a Challenger event and was out for a couple of months. You have something seriously wrong with you if you want any of these guys to get hurt!!

Keith - Do you know where we can get the attendence for the different events? On these articles, the PBR states that 1.7 million people attend all the PBR events (including the lower level), so the numbers have to be somewhere. It would be interesting to know how many fans are at each one of the events and how the PBR decides where they will hold the events for next year and if it will be a 1, 2, or 3 day event. I know more goes into deciding where events are held than just attendance, but obviously, attendance is the most important part. Can't pay the bills, if a few attend.

I attended both days in Ontario, and I also noticed many empty seats. Too many. I watch the
PBR every week, so I knew it was on the schedule, but did not hear any local advertising
on the radio to promote the event, which could have helped with attendence.

Also, southern California fans can be finicky. The cowboy culture is not mainstream here,
and it took fans a little while to warm up, particularly on Saturday night. I'm sure
    Flint Rasmussen would agree.

I believe the venue would have had more people attending if 1) there was better advertising,
and 2) the cost of tickets was a litte less. (Despite popular reality/tv shows, not everyone
in SoCal drives a BMW or Mercedes and lives in multi-million dollar homes). The top tier
tickets were $100 each, and I would have loved to have been able to select those for my
husband and myself, but couldn't afford that for both days.

Don't get me wrong, I am glad I went. You get to see so much more than what is presented on
tv - and Flint is truly a gifted entertainer. I will be curious to see if Ontario is on the
schedule for next year. If not, then I may have to plan to save up my pennies and take a
road trip for another fun weekend.

Eliott did a good job but when he got hurt sunday night i thought he was a little rude
about when the doctors were trying to help him out of the arena and the one doctor had to pull
him to the back he should just go and let them help him if i were tandy if he said that to me
i would have just let him go and see how far he made it before he needed help. if he wants
to do good he needs to calm down and stop acting like that he was even saying bad thinks
before he got on that bull if he wants to talk like that he needs to get hurt a few times and
maybe it will make him think about the way he talks and acted to the doctors they are
    just trying to help

    Hey Junior,

Way to go man! You really spiced up the show. I wonder how it feels to get tackled by someone who is twice as big as you?

Thank you to the PBR for allowing the wreck to happen.

Well ESPN may do,everybody has it,and is a beginning. As long as they don't treat us as secondhad people, and don't make us watch parts of events at midnight on a Wednsday, for example, or during the day when most of us are at work, you know what I mean.We want to see the events live, and not to accomodate "more important"sports.

webpbr: Last night Versus advertised that Round 2/Short Go of Ontario would be on at 9ET today. I do hope that time is right, because I'm really looking forward to watching it. Not sure why pbrnow.com reported the earlier time.

I was going to drive 2 hours off the mountain,to Ontario, but instead I went to watch it at a frind o mine who has Dish.So for a bottle and five stakes we all had good time and front row seats.I was verry disappointed when 8:00 pm came and went and had to even watch the post game show of the football game.I am sorry for the folks back east since it was past 11:30 pm.for them, and the event took place in the afternoon. It shows how much Versus cares about our sport.PBR,dump VS first chance you have and put it on RFDTV.And those folks who hurry to change carriers,of course it is their irht to do whatever they want, are only giving more power to Versus to do to them next year, what they did to us Direct customers now.Dump Versus when the contract expires and let us watch our sport without all the drama. There is enough PRCA,PBR,Exreme Bulls, and all kind of related events troghout the year to fill the time of a separate channel dedicated to all those sports, which we all love.

To webpbr couldn't watch last night - we have Directv - but we went to the Reno event and there were empty seats every where - that is not a big building so I was really surprised to see such a poor attendance. Have to say that if we can't watch and keep up with what is going on our interest will fade and that tasteless joke that the PBR played on us fans with the so-called big announcement still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. We have tickets for next weekend in Portland and honestly do not feel the usual excitement in going. In fact, if I had not already purchased these tickets I am not sure that I would do so now. The PBR needs to find a way for all of its fans to continue to watch this sport or I am afraid it will see a decline in even more events.

I just got Dish hooked up friday night, I will need to learn to use the DVR when they
start so late. I did enjoy being able to see the whole show and I love micheal Gaffney
    for a commentator.
I also noticed Dish TV had some signs there. When Direct ask me why
I was quiting, they had heard the reason before, I wonder how many people have changed.
I would like to see JB & Luke Snyder ride every time but was happy for Kasey Hayes. I also noticed the empty seats, it should be better tonight.

As I was watching it on TV last night, I was surprised about the number of empty seats. The areana looked almost empty on the second level and there were a large number of empty seats on the lower level. Does anyone know how we can find out what the attendence was last night and the attendence at each event, seperately?
