Top three riders within 1,000 points of each other with two events left before Finals

PORTLAND, Ore. (October 4, 2009) - It was not a rosy outcome for the Top 3 bull riders in the world.

Prior to this weekend, Kody Lostroh, Guilherme Marchi and J.B. Mauney had accounted for five of the past six Built Ford Tough Series event wins. But the GoDaddy.com Invitational in Portland, Ore., was about travel partners, countrymen and family.

Lostroh’s best friend and travel mate Josh Koschel won the opening round. But he couldn’t hold onto the lead Saturday night at the Rose Garden Arena. Marchi’s countryman Valdiron de Oliveira, who without winning an event this year could still factor into the race for the world title, gave a valiant effort in trying to win his first event since New York City in January of 2008.

But it was Mauney’s brother-in-law, Shane Proctor, who came out on top.

Proctor, who is originally from the Pacific Northwest, went three-for-three this weekend, and surprised the crowd by passing up Troubadour with the first pick in the championship round draft.

Four times this season that bull has been selected by the event winner with the first pick in the draft.

Instead, Proctor went with Okie Dokie.

“I made a business decision,” said Proctor, who in spite of wanting a shot at Troubadour, went with a bull he saw Mauney win a round on at the Calgary Stampede. “I figured if it worked for him it might as well work for me.”

The pick paid off big for the Washington native, who moved to the Southeast after marrying Mauney’s sister Jessi. He rode Okie Dokie for 87.75 points, which was enough to win the event by less than a point over Oliveira.

Proctor’s three-bull total was 261, while Oliveira finished second with 260.25. Ryan McConnel (258.5), Robson Palermo (178) and Billy Robinson (170) rounded out the Top 5 finishers for the weekend.

Proctor added that his first-ever BFTS win was “a long time coming” after being “off and on the tour for the last three-and-a-half years.”

As much as the 29th stop on the BFTS was about everyone other than the Top 3 – six other riders in the Top 10 made it back to the short go – the outcome had everything to do with the overall World Standings.

Lostroh was 0-for-2 and noticeably absent from the championship round for the first time since missing the event in Worcester, Mass., back in early May. More importantly, he saw his lead in the standings cut back to under 1,000 points with two events remaining before the World Finals.

Marchi missed the final round as well, but by virtue of his fifth place finish in Round 1, his 145.5 total points brought him to within 962 points of Lostroh. The same goes for Mauney, who was 1-for-3 but is only 972.5 points off Lostroh’s pace.

“Every single bull counts,” said nine-time World Champion Ty Murray, who was in the broadcast booth for the first time since Albuquerque. “This is a race that could come down to one bull.”

Broadcast partner Justin McKee agreed, going so far as to say, “It could come down to the difference between an 85 and a 90-point ride.”

Looking down the standings, Robinson may have been the most excited fifth-place finisher this season.

His weekend earnings of $4,623 moved him to him 37th in the Qualifier Standings as a handful of riders fight for an opportunity to be among the Top 40 money earners competing in Las Vegas beginning Oct. 30.

As it stands right now, last year’s Daisy Rookie of the Year Reese Cates is in the 40th spot, but with only $48,313.67, there are three other riders – Elliott Jacoby, Edvaldo Ferreira and Beau Hill – within $1,000 of him.

There are only five lower-level events remaining, all of which coincide with the two remaining BFTS events, all four will have to ride bulls in Columbus, Ohio, or Uncasville, Ct.; whereas riders like Brian Herman, 34, and Cord McCoy, 35, can earn money in Roswell, N.M., or in Texas in Pasadena, San Antonio or Victoria.

Next weekend, the BFTS will be in Columbus for the Cooper Tire Invitational presented by Copenhagen Bull Riding. The two-day event takes place Saturday night and Sunday afternoon at the Nationwide Arena.

The regular season then finishes the following weekend with a three-day affair in Uncasville at the Mohegan Sun Arena.

It was good to see the PBR on CBS this weekend. I p!@#ed the news on to others who wanted to
watch the PBR'S but could not because of the services that they had. One quoted that DirectTV
wasn't worth the money and one had Dish that could not see the PBR's until then. I personally
enjoyed the best of both worlds, CBS and Versus. I really enjoyed Ty Murray on the air. He was
very informative and yes, less commercials. Versus aired for quite some time and I enjoyed
every bit of it, I watched it over and over. J.B. Mauney-the time is here, show us what you
are really made of. Make this Oklahoman proud to root for you! Get your game on and go for
the Title, after all, it is your year. Proud to be a Mauney fan!!!!!! Love ya kid and show the
world that it's your time to shine.
    Loving you in Oklahoma

I live in Los Angeles and we got all 15 rides here. I thought it was great--much better than NBC. However, I do wish that they had shown the short go on VS, too, for those of us who still have it.

Sorry that not everyone got to see the same coverage, though (or any, for that matter). Too bad you can't get all the affiliates to carry the same things.

I live in Texas and the coverage of CBS was very good here. We got a full hour
showing all the rides. I thought the amount of interviews and coverage was very
well done. I did enjoy the way Ty explained bull riding for those that are not
regular bull riding fans. I feel bad for those that did not get to see it because
their area decided not to televise it.

I am so PISSED, I live in WA,, the CBS comes out of YAkama, and they run those dam infomercieals. I tried to call the jerks, they don't work on Sun's I guess. PBR and Versus don't deal with those jerks. the networks don't have a brain or they would cover the PBR on the sports. If they need a reporter I will Valenteer. Go to RFDTV, they do bull-riden and rodeo. I havn't seen Justin McGee on that new program, I got it ready to DVR Thur. so I don't miss it. I lov TY but I miss 'OL J DUB behind the mike.

I'm glad Shane Proctor won the event, however; I had to log on the web to find out who won. CBS in our area did not carry the final go-around, very dissapointing after watching round 1 & 2. I hope that in the future if you are going to air on CBS, then have coverage also on Versus.

not bad, but I think that PBR should have gone for 2 hours, becuz right after, it was a paid programming, and there like 4-6 replays on mauney than any other rides out there and that covered pretty much of the hour too,

So very disappointed in the championship round on CBS. We were treated to infomercials instead of bullriding. I certainly hope that pbr/versus never leaves us fans hanging again. Keep the bull riding on versus so that fans can see the coverage, not a load of bull.

Way to go Shane! But as far as CBS goes - Shame on you. Here in Mooresville, NC no final round just ignorant infomercials for junk no one wants or needs. I needed my bullriding fix & all I got was irritated! Hope final round will at least get posted online since CBS got bucked off in 0.00 seconds!

CBS did a great job with only a few short commercials and then right back to bullriding. It was definitely the best network event that I have ever seen. I agree that the hour seemed to have more content than the Versus programming. It was great to see Craig,Ty and Leah but sure did miss Justin McKee. Thanks for giving us DTV viewers an opportunity to keep up with our favorite riders.

I thought the point of CBS carrying the short go was so that it could be covered across the
nation. Neither the Altanta affiliate or the south Florida affiliate carried the event. The
Altanta affiliate showed the PBR in its programming; however, they actually carried paid
advertising for a foreclosure auction and some kind of a back pain machine. I understand that the PBR is trying to find alternatives to the Direct TV mess; however, it appears that the major
networks have no control over their affilaites when it comes to programing. If they are going
to hype coverage on a major network as they did last night on the versus coverage, they need to make sure that it is really going to be shown on that network. I am really disappointed in how listtle respect this sport gets by the national networks.

I am watching it right now on CBS and have called my family so they can see it, too. Justin
McKee is missed, CBS has done a great job, Ty's explanations of bull riding are great for
people who have never seen it, but I've got to say Frank Newsom stole the show several times
in this event. All of the riders and bullfighters are great, but for this event Frank is
    definitely MVP.

I think CBS did a great job. They packed a lot more in an hour, then Versus (Comcast) ever did. It was good to see Craig Hummer, Leah, and Ty. Where was Justin McCee? Good job CBS, and Randy and the PBR.

Congrats to Shane Proctor. Sorry to hear about injuries to Cody Ford and Travis Sellers. We have a running inside joke with Travis Sellers, the last couple of times we have seen him. We were hoping he made it to Vegas, we will be there, but with the injury, it doesn't look good.

Just something to think about: After Omaha, Lostroh was leading Marchi by 1274 points and Mauney by 1978.5. Lostroh was hurt in Omaha with a broke nose, torn ligaments in his riding elbow and the MRI revealed a fracture on the inside of his elbow, that needs surgery. We have now had 10 events since Omaha and a possible 8600 points and he still leads Marchi by 962 and Mauney by 972.5. I find this amazing considering he missed one event due to his injury, and has now been riding with a hurt shoulder for the last 3 events. Just imagine what he could do healthy. For those that are counting him out, beware, he was been counted out several times this year, and he is still number one. Will his injuries catch up to him in Vegas? We will see, but I still think he will win the World Title. That is my prediction.
