UNCASVILLE, Conn. (October 18, 2009) - The Professional Bull Riders, Inc. (PBR) sent the top 40 bull riders in the world to New England for three performances of non-stop action on October 16-18. At the Mohegan Sun Invitational presented by Cooper Tires, the 31st and final stop of the 2009 Built Ford Tough Series (BFTS) regular season.  In the end, PBR veteran Zack Brown (Santa Fe, Texas) took the coveted event title, logging his fourth win of the year.  He totaled 344.75 points on four bulls and collected a check for $34,163.  Brown not only added to his 2009 Qualifier dollars, but more importantly, moved up one spot in the 2009 Built Ford Tough World Standings and is now sitting in the fourth spot.

“It (the event win) feels just like when I won the first one,” Brown said from the winner’s circle. “It’s exciting. I came here with a goal to win it and it wound up in my favor.”

In round one, Brown rode Team Equine’s Evil Forces, owned by Dakota Rodeo/Clay Struve, for 87 points and a third place finish.  He followed that up with an 85.5 point score on Chad Berger/Clay Struve’s bull, Little Coyote.  He split seventh and eighth place in round three after riding the bull, Wrangler Big Rig of Jeff Robinson/Bar None/McNeely’s/SkyHawk Rugs/Cynthia Patterson.  Brown entered the Built Ford tough Championship Round in first place and chose to ride the bull, Red Bull (Jeff Robinson Bucking Bulls) during the PBR Bull Draft held at intermission.  He tamed the bull for 86.75 points and claimed the final event title of the 2009 season!

“I’m not giving up on my goal for the season and I’m going to fight it out to the bitter end,” Brown continued.  “It’s pretty basic, stay on your bulls.  It’s going to be an interesting, very interesting Finals.”

2008 World Finals event winner Robson Palermo (Rio Branco, Acre, Brazil) finished second overall after totaling 343.75 points and earned $14,581.  Taking third place was Rocky McDonald (Col. Juarez, MEX) who scored 343.25 points on four bulls and collected a check for $10,090 while North Carolina superstar J.B. Mauney (Mooresville, N.C.) finished fourth place with 341.75 points and $8,531.  Rounding out fifth place was 2008 PBR World Champion Guilherme Marchi (Leme, SP, Brazil) who left Connecticut with a total of 341.25 points and added $12,665 to his bank account.

The 2009 Built Ford Tough Series regular season is officially over and the top 40 riders in the world are heading to Las Vegas for the PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals.  For a sixteenth year, the PBR will crown a World Champion who will take not only the coveted gold buckle, but the $1 million bonus.  Tune in to VERSUS, NBC, and CBS as they broadcast every round from the Thomas & Mack Arena.  Be sure to check www.pbrnow.com for upcoming cities, ticket information, and complete broadcast times.

INJURY REPORT:
Luke Snyder
(Raymore, Mo.) aggravated a shoulder injury from last weekend’s event in Columbus.  He will not compete the rest of the weekend.

Brian Canter (Randleman, N.C.) tore the ACL in his left knee in a motorbike accident.  He is not definitely out, but is doubtful for the World Finals.

Ryan Dirteater (Hulbert, Okla.) dislocated his left knee.  He is undergoing tests at a local hospital including an MRI.  He is out for World Finals and out for an undetermined amount of time.

BEHIND THE CHUTES:
Enterprise Rent-A-Car’s “Ride with the Best” Bonus:

Due to his round two win at the Cooper Tires Invitational in Columbus, Ohio, current world no. 1 bull rider Kody Lostroh (Longmont, Colo.) was eligible to compete for the $5,000 Enterprise Rent-A-Car “Ride with the Best” bonus during round one of the Mohegan Sun Invitational presented by Cooper Tires in Uncasville, Conn.  Lostroh did not make the eight second whistle on the bull, Hillbilly; therefore, the stock contractor, Jeff Robinson Bucking Bulls, collected the $5,000 bonus.

Due to receiving the higher back judge score during last night’s round one, Travis Briscoe (Edgewood, N.M.) was eligible to compete for the $5,000 Enterprise Rent-A-Car “Ride with the Best” bonus during round two of the Mohegan Sun Invitational.  Because of his qualified ride on the bull, Clam Digger, owned by Dakota Rodeo/John & Lacey Berger, Briscoe was awarded the $5,000 bonus.

Due to his round two victory, 2008 PBR World Champion bull Guilherme Marchi (Leme, SP, Brazil) was eligible for the bonus during round three of the Uncasville event.  Because of his qualified ride on 55 Farms Bucking Bulls’ bull, Mayday, he took home the $5,000 bonus.

Ford Truck Moment of Truth Bonus:
Zack Brown
(Santa Fe, Texas) was in the lead going into the Built Ford Tough Championship Round and ultimately, won the Mohegan Sun Invitational and collected the $5,000 bonus.  The bonus grows by $5,000 each week if it is not claimed.  Once claimed, it returns to $5,000.

Ford F-150 Challenge:
As Mohegan Sun Invitational presented by Cooper Tires event winner, Zack Brown (Santa Fe, Texas) has qualified for a chance to participate as a Ford F-150 Challenge contestant at the 2009 PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals, against all other 2009 Built Ford Tough Series event winners who qualify for the Finals.  The Ford F-150 Challenge contestant who finishes the highest in the event aggregate during the 2009 PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals will win $50,000 towards the purchase of a brand-new 2009 F-150 truck.

Salem NationaLease Bull of the Event:
The bull, All In, owned by Dakota Rodeo/Naccarato/Struve, earned Bull of the Event honors with a score of 44.25 points.  This honor is acknowledged by an award of $1,250 going to the top bull of each event as determined by the PBR judges’ bull score.

High-Marked Ride of the Event:
Travis Briscoe
(Edgewood, N.M.) recorded the high-marked ride of the Mohegan Sun Invitational in Uncasville, Conn., after riding the bull, Aerial Assault, owned by Sonny Williams, for 88.6 points in the Built Ford Tough Championship Round.

Daisy Rookie of the Year Standings:

buffalowoman: Bull riders tie their boots on purposefully so that the boots don't come off. Not only do they have to balance them selves but they have to squeeze their thighs, turn their toes out and use their spurs to help hold on. **And let me emphasize that the spurs are not sharp...PETA please hear that! If the bull rider doesn't "get a holt" he will not cover the bull. I am a mom of a teenage bull rider and I am proud to say that I learned this at a bull riding school!!

i have to ask a question. Why do the riders tie their boots down hard and fast? If the
boots could pull off wouldn't it cut down on hang-ups? when my foot hung in the stirrup
losing my boot saved me a dragging.

Dear webpbr and reznibd....this was fun this afternoon! We all love different things about the sport of bull riding but we ALL love PBR the same!! I think I will move over to one of the new blogs and have some fun this evening when I get home...(oops I think I just confessed that I am at work) Have fun in Vegas and who knows maybe we will all end up sitting together :) Webpbr: I hope you are too busy with everything bull riding to enter a casino.

    reznibd - I like your line: "Here's to ......

I will be in Vegas the last four days. Looking forward to the PBR event, fan zones, drafts, and of course the casinos and just the atmosphere in Vegas.

Oops! Fixed my grammar on this entry.

Dear silcox4525 - I'm with you on the "little kid" reference. I, too, am like a kid when it comes to the PBR, esp. the bulls. Of course, I have my favorite cowboys, but the bulls make my heart sing. I know that sounds weird, but they just make me happy to see them each week! I will miss Dirteater at the Finals. Will miss Mike White a lot and Brendon Clark. I've really grown fond of Ryan McConnell, so I hope he has a good showing. I like Kody and Guilherme, but my heart is with JB "Show Me the Mauney!" Here's to no injuries, no tantrums, no poor judging calls but rather good, clean, honest bull riding, and may the most deserving bull win Bull of the Year (what a hard choice to make)!

webpbr: Thanks for the feedback and the intent was not to debate. :) But we are Bull Rider fans talking about our favorite sport "Bull Riding" and most people who post on here are hardcore fans. So glad that you are a fan and thank you for your nephew's service to our country. No athlete in any sport should ever be compared to what our troops do for us..totally different deal. I'm glad we can agree on that. Can't wait to get to Vegas and watch my favorite athletes perform for us in the "Greatest Sport on Earth"

Silcox4525 - By the way, my comments are not to take anything away from your son and his decision to be a bull rider. Also, I think we all need to keep in mind, we are talking about sports. There are military, police and firefighters that put their lives on the line everyday, for our safety and security. I have a nephew, that has done two tours in Iraq and will deploy to Afganistan within the next few months. Kind of puts everything in perspective.

silcox4525 - I was talking about athletes who are injured, continue to play, even at the risk of becoming more injured, fought thru the pain and they did it for their "team", not for themselves.

There are many examples, but one that comes to mind that I witnessed on TV. Emmitt Smith, of the Dallas Cowboys, separated his shoulder in the last regular season game, in 1994. It was a game they had to have and they were playing the NY Giants. He came over to the sideline, they "poped" his shoulder back in and he went back on the field and continued to carry the ball. He was in tremendous pain and taking hits to his shoulder, every time he touched the ball. Emmitt would carry the ball with one arm and come back to the huddle with the arm hanging. Dallas won the game 16-13, and went on to win the Super Bowl.

Was he in danger of dying? No. But, he was in tremendous pain, risking his health, and his career (he was making millions a year) for his team. He could have sat out and let someone else try and win the game, but he didn't.

Again, this takes nothing away from the tremendous effort that Zack put out. My comments were to only say that there are other athletes that sacrifice their bodies and health to finish what they started.
  • silcox4525
    October 20, 2009
webpbr - I beg to differ. There are no other professional athletes in ANY sport out there that risk and endure what professional and amateur Bull Riders do!! I have a teenage son who does this every weekend and I promise you he is never completely healthy and keeps on getting on bulls with the knowledge that most likely he will be adding another injury during that ride or the next one. Until I understood and was able to touch and feel it thru my son I didn't get it. These athletes are the most unique and gifted in mind and body that you will ever find. We lost those kind of athletes years ago. Professional Bull Riding IS the Toughest Sport on Earth!! Sure hope you are convinced now.

silcox4525 - What Zack did this weekend was amazing and showed how much heart Zach has. However, there have been numerous times that other professional athletes have performed hurt and it was amazing wathching them "play" through the pain. That does not take anything away from Zack, but it does happen in other sports as well.

First congrats Zack...what a way to "Cowboy Up"...I love it! Try and find a professional athlete in any other sport do what he did!! I think there will be several Bull Riders who will get to Vegas and keep doing what they do best without all the drama. These guys will give the writers, commentators and announcers some fresh material when it really matters and people are really listening.

Heartbroken about Dirteater's injury and disappointed he won't be performing for us in Vegas. I will be looking for him and can't wait to give him a big "MOM" hug. He has the best smile and laugh! Ryan , you are surrounded by God's grace and great people and the unfortunate things that have happened this year is what will define you and your career.

Also I can't wait to see my favorite Bull Rider (his mom knows who I am speaking of)do his thing. Never cared to visit Vegas before but now I find myself counting down the days like a little kid!!

Dear webpbr -You and I don't agree on a whole lot, as you well know, but I do agree that Brendon's actions were a wee bit over the top as were JB's last week. You know I'm a JB fan, but I had hoped he was over that. At this point in time, they do have a bunch on the line, so maybe that's why it got so bad, but Mike White's actions or should I say reaction was right on--he did himself proud. I do think he's a bit older than the other two, though. Such does make a difference, methinks! I do wish even the younger guns could rein themselves in a bit more, when they get upset with themselves. Little kids are, after all, watching them and look up to them.

Poor Ryan Dirteater. I could barely watch his wreck as it was happening let alone all of the replays of it. Honestly, I still cannot believe it happened to him again, but then again, look at what happened to Paulo Crimber. On the positive side, Ryan is young, so he should mend a bit more quickly. He's done so well this year despite his injuries as has Brian Canter. I'll miss Ryan in the Finals and expect to be missing Brian too.

Fans, go into twitter brendonclark80 and there is a picture of Ryan Dirteater. He looks a lot happier than he did when we saw him being carried out of the arena. Thank Goodness! He is such a nice person and it was just awful to see his wreck coming off of that bull. I know he will have to go throuth so much healing but it sure is good to see a smile on his face.

It wasn't the toughest bull pen of the year, but Mohegan Sun was great: lots of guys got good rides, Rocky McDonald and Dusty Ephrom each had their best event of the season, Marchi and Mauney snuck a little closer to Lostroh, and Zack Brown was amazing -- he was in so much pain from his ribs after his short go ride that he could barely stand, but he cowboyed up, walked back out in the arena, did his interviews and accepted his check and buckle, and tipped his hat to the crowd.

There was more than one bull rope thrown this weekend. (They do make a distinctive noise when they hit a concrete floor!) Give Brendon Clark a break: he could have died in Omaha, and it’s impressive that he came back this year at all. So tough for him and Mike White; I was really pulling for both of them.

The Ryan Dirteater wreck was awful. You could see his knee bend sideways. KRC, please give us an update as soon as you can.

Tough break for Ryan Dirteater. The east coast wishes you a speedy recovery. It was very

Congrats to Zack. He sure did a great job this weekend.

Mohegan Sun this year was a very different event from last year. For one thing, almost all the riders needed to compete because of the tight races, so there was not the luxury of taking the weekend off to rest up and heal for Vegas.

I went to cheer Mike White, hoping that he would find a way to make the cut. He didn't, and I just hope it wasn't his last bull ride, but he has already given so much to the sport that I wish him well in whatever decision he makes.

Ryan Dirteater...there are just no words for how sad the crowd felt while he was being carried out of the arena. He's in prayers and thoughts.

A funny conversation from the lobby where CBS was taping their segment for next week. A woman asked me, pointing to Ty Murray, "Is that Jewel's husband?" Her daughter disagreed, saying she was wrong. I couldn't resist and said, "M'am, that is Ty Murray, King of the Cowboys, and Jewel is his wife." Mother and daughter looked at me for a second, and finally mother said, "So am I right?"

First, congratulations to Zack for a win that was to me the most well deserved win
of the year. To be in such pain, as you could see on his face before leaving the
chute and after his ride, it was amazing that he was able to stay on the bull for
the 8! Way to go Zack.
So sorry about Ryan. Such a horrible thing to happen, especially since he had the
broken femur earlier in the year and then the broken jaw. Ryan is such a good rider
and a really nice young man. I will be keeping him in my prayers.
This was one of the most unusual events I have seen this year. It was wonderful to
see so many rides, but frustrating to see so many low bull scores. I know the best
bulls were not going to be at this event because of the traveling distance to Vegas,
but with this being such a tight race for the #1 spot and those trying to make it to
Vegas, I feel something should be changed to allow riders at this last event before
the Finals the opportunity to get on good bulls to score well enough to achieve those
    goals.
Well, all is said and done and now we head to the Finals. It is going to be a fight
to the finish. Still pulling for Kody to hold on to that lead all the way through the
Finals and win the World Championship!!

Congrats to Zach! Great guy, good sense of humor, toughed it out with the injury.

It's a shame about Ryan Dirteater. Tremendous young man. I hope he will be able to come back and come back strong

Kody Lostroh should have pushed the challenge button in the short go. Being nice and just taking what the judges give you, was not good decision, in this case.

Bulls stunk in all rounds, including short go. This reminded me of an NFL preseason game: not having your best players (bulls) play. I know it is because the bulls have to travel across the couuntry, to the finals. However, if that is the case, then don't schedule the last event, across the country or make the event shorter.

Where are the negative comments about Brendon Clark's meltdown after his buckoff in round 2? His actions were, IMO, worse than JB's last week, but nobody has said anything. He screams, cusses, throw his bull rope twice, and this happened just behind the chutes, not in the dressing area, and he almost hit someone with the bull rope. I know he was frustrated, but there is no excuse for that. I don't care who the rider is. When I started watching the PBR I was told "the guys are different" but they seem the same as other atheletes. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but you can't have it both ways.

Mike White is a cl!@# guy. In his interview with Leah, she asked about him missing the finals and he said there are no excuses, it was his fault. She then tried to give him an out, and talked about his injury, but he said he should have rode some bulls that he got bucked off and nobody to blame but himself. Now, that is cl!@#!

That was a very fun event to watch! I loved seeing so many rides and especially seeing my favorites do really well! Don't know which makes me more sick, though -- Reese Cates and Mike White missing the finals or Ryan Dirteater's horrible injury. Probably the latter, especially coming as it does when he was just coming back from the broken femur. I certainly wish Ryan a speedy recovery with as little pain as possible. I know he's in good hands.

WOW!! That was a great end of the year before the Finals event in 3 days and a short go. only 5 riders didn't score a ride, 16 rode 1 bull, 7 rode 2, 3 rode 3 & 9 rode 4, AWESOME,..Anyone from the 13 position L.J. Jenkin can win the event and event win the gold buckle,.. they are all capable of pulling it off,.....so GOD bless and safe rides to all riders that will be in the Finals and of course there will have to be at least 5 alternates,...Congrats! to Zack,I knew he is always a threat to the top 3 and take that buckle.

StLouisPBRfan: I think the short-go is going to be televised on CBS next Sunday (October 25). At least, that's what the PBR TV schedule page says. Hope both of us are able to see it!

I'm bummed! The short-go was to be on CBS today. There has been wall-to-wall football on that station in St. Louis! I am watching tonight at 8 p.m., which I guess is the Sunday rides. I sure hope the short-go is included. I know it is good for the PBR to be on network TV but for avid fans it's sometimes not so good.

It is always great to see the bulls and riders in the shortgo. I read Zack Brown won...good for him. Nice guy, met him at the St. Louis and Springfield, Mo events. Go Kody and JB!!!

I went to all 3 PBR shows and they were great. I rly hope Ryan Dirteater is ok. I give him alot of credit for doing what he does. I give all the pbr members credit for doing what they do. The more I watch PBR the more I want to do it. Keep it up boys !!!!!:)

I love the new live score feature! I kept track of what went on but I am also going to watch the event on VS later tonight. I was so sad to hear Ryan Dirteater got hurt again! The poor boy can't catch a break!!

    And way to go Marchi!!

I just got home, what an event! So glad Ryan Dirteater is not hurt worse, that looked horrible. Thanks for a great event PBR!
txpbrgal, the short-go should be on the broadcast tonight (it starts in about 3 minutes). The thing next weekend is a show to get ready for the world finals... I was there when they taped it tonight, and talked to the title contenders, stuff like that.

I was not able to watch so I enjoyed the event live scoring feature we now have. Thanks again BN. So sad that Ryan Dirteater was badly injured. I know they say he won't compete in the finals but I sure would like to see him show up. Please come if you can.
The event seemed to have very low bull scores over the 3 days. Even people got rerides when the scores looked similar. Only seeing scores does have its disadvantages. Very happy that Marchi and JB have closed the gap on Kody. They are my picks for the world this year.
One thing I can't tell from the tv schedule is if the short go will be broadcast on VS this weekend or everyone will have to wait for next wknd. I guess the future posts will tell us that. If that is the case I don't expect to hear many good comments. Well all that can see the event, enjoy
