PBR fan favorite Ryan Dirteater (Hulbert, Okla.) will not compete at the 2009 PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals due to an injury sustained at the Mohegan Sun Invitational in Uncasville, Conn.; therefore, no. 41 man Elliott Jacoby (Fredericksburg, Texas) will compete in his place.  Additionally, five riders have qualified as alternates.  They are:  Billy Robinson (Galax, Va.), Reese Cates (Carthage, Texas), Clayton Baethge (Johnson City, Texas), Mike White (De Kalb, Texas), and Dusty Ephrom (Arcola, SK, Canada).

For a fourth year, the top bull riding superstars from all of the international tours have qualified to compete in the first three rounds of competition.  If any of the international qualifiers earn enough money to break them into the top 40 in the world standings, based on money, they will progress into the second weekend of the Finals. PBR Australia, Brazil, Canada, and Mexico will be sending the no. 1 rider in their standings.  David Kennedy (Kyogle, AUS) will be the PBR Australia representative; Zane Lambert (Westbourne, MB) will represent PBR Canada; Edimundo Gomes (Brazil) will ride for PBR Brazil; and Gustavo Pedrero (Jalisco, MEX) will be the PBR Mexico rider.

The PBR World Finals consists of eight rounds of competition.  The first seven rounds feature the top 40 riders matched against the sport’s toughest bulls.  The top 15 riders based upon their total cumulative scores after seven rounds will qualify to compete in one final decisive round of competition, which will take place at the conclusion of the seventh performance on Sunday, November 8.

The rider with the highest total score on eight bulls will earn the 2009 PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals event title.  The PBR World Finals event winner should not be confused with the PBR World Champion.  The 2009 PBR World Champion will be the rider who totals the most Built Ford Tough Series points throughout the course of the entire season including the PBR World Finals.  Both the 2009 World Champion and World Finals event winner will be named on Sunday, November 8.

Additionally, the PBR is excited to announce its bullfighting and judging crews for the 200 PBR World Finals.  Each was selected by the top 40 bull riders – one of the highest honors in professional bull riding.

The 2009 PBR World Finals Dickies DuraBullfighters are Shorty Gorham (Cotulla, Texas), Frank Newsom (Saratoga, Olka.), Joe Baumgartner (Red Bluff, Calif.), and Jesse Byrne (Prince Albert, SK, Canada).  Darrell Diefenbach (Azle, Texas) was selected as the alternate.

The 2009 PBR World Finals Judging Team is made up of Jim Bob Custer, Lane Foltyn, Chuck Lambert, Bill Pacheco, and Jeff Shearer who will be the replay judge.

I'd like to see (and print) the complete list of the World Finals Qualifiers above. However, there is a photo of Las Vegas covering the stats of the top 10 riders. Is there any way to remove the photo or move it to a different location on the home page so we can see the list in its entirety? (Or is it just my computer?)

    Thanks!

webpbr- guess it's being consistance, as you put it, blame one why not all, right? am sure they all do, no one is perfect,..
  • webpbr
    October 23, 2009
pavilion - It was NOT just one incident. Brendon, threw a bigger fit during the World Cup. Also, I am not defending JB. I am saying Brendon's actions were worse, in my opinion, than JB's actions the previous week, because he did it infront of the crowd and behind the chutes, which the crowd can see and hear. With that said, there were many comments on here about JB, which mine were among them. Brendon does the same thing the following week, and nothing. If you are going to complain about JB, then be consistent and complain about Brendon, otherwise, you look like you are bias towards JB and his "actions". As people know, I don't like JB, but it is actions that I have talked about. I have never called him names, I have talked about his actions.
  • pavilion
    October 23, 2009
so, just because of one incident, you will judge a person, worst than JB? than you saw only half of what Mauney can do,.. he known for his punching rails, kicking gates, throwing bullropes and his helmets just inside the gates,...he didn't even wait til locker rooms too, and if he get to the locker room, hey all sinks and trash cans weren't safe.
  • webpbr
    October 23, 2009
pavilion - Whether you are mad at yourself, the bull, the camera man or anybody else, there is no excuse to cuss, numerous times, scream and throw your rope, twice, especially in the arena and right behind the chutes, as Brendon did. Also, on one occasion, he almost hit someone with the bull rope that he was throwing down. His actions were worse than JB's because he did not even wait until he got back to dressing area. As I have said before, "all", sould be consistent. If you are going to complain about one rider for his actions, then complain about another rider for the same actions.

There are always going to be frustrations and disappointments, in sports and life in general. It is how you handle those, that tell the true character of a person.
  • pavilion
    October 23, 2009
hey, you guys are saying Bredon Clark is starint to act up a little, and I believe that this is the first time we have seen him throw his bullropes,...well, here is why, he is upset that he didn't made the cut to go to PBR Finals and mad at himself, maybe a little frustrated with himself too,...wouldn't you do the same if you were in his shoe?,..other than that he is alway with a smile like Wiley, Cord and Kody,..

    October 23, 2009
webpbr, good,..well I have: 1. Marchi (back to back)
    2. Lostroh (Marchi p!@#es him in 3rd rd.)
    3. Brown (will finish just 1500 pts behind)
    4. Oliveria( he too will ride 7 bulls)
    5. Mauney ( he will out pick himself,he likes rank bull they will
    dump him)
    6. Petersen ( he too will ride good as he have always done in the
    Finals)

just want to put my two cents in.

my prediction is: Mauney, Lostroh, Marchi.

World finals average winner is: Cody Nance Or Ryan McConnel.

  • webpbr
    October 23, 2009
Pavilion - It was a joke, sorry you did not pick up on that.

Since you want a prediction and my prediction seems to be important to you: Lostroh, Marchi, Mauney.

  • pavilion
    October 23, 2009
    webpbr,
Now what kind of a prediction is that?,..My prediction for the World Champ is. It will be either Lostroh, or Marchi, or Mauney.

Predicting is when you put your picks in order that you think the player/rider/team will place/fall,..let's say you predicted,..1. Marchi, 2 Mauney and 3 Loshrtoh,.. may not happen that way, Brown may have ridden so good, like he did of late,.. he could be#1, 2.Lostroh, 3.Mauney,..and so on,..this is just an example of predictions, and it could go completely the opposite.

With the small point spread and the way the top three have been riding lately as well as all year, they have the biggest odds of winning. Yes, there is a slime chance for an outsider but very slim considering the performance of the top three. It's obvious it will be a fight to the finish. It definitely will be an amazing race to watch and I hope we see great performances from all the riders. I love watching the riders beat the athletic strength of the bulls. Guess I always cheer for the riders but I have great respect for the ability of the bulls.
My pick for #1 is JB of course. I pick JB because of his love for life, his free spirit, the untamed wild cowboy side of him, but most of all his exciting style of bullriding. He truely will make a great PBR World Champion!!
JB will win the World!!!!!! GoGoGooooo JB!!!!!!
  • msGail
    October 22, 2009
Will be so exciting can hardly wait!!!!!!! I am pulling for Marchi and if it can't be him then Cody L. It will just be hard to say it will be ride for ride and the one who can ride the most will be the new Champ. Marchi rode all bulls last year but 1 remains to be seen how it will turn out this year. YES BRING BACK THE TOP 45 I am sure all fans miss that. Good Luck to all riders, God Bless and keep you all safe. It sure will be exciting!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just wish I could be there.

    October 22, 2009
jb will win! Marchi will be 2nd. Kody will fall to 4th, and Zach will move up to 3rd. Cody Nance is who im putting out there to win the Finals. I know he's a long shot but the kids got heart!
  • webpbr
    October 22, 2009
My prediction for the World Champ is...... It will be either Lostroh, or Marchi, or Mauney. I know that is not much of a prediction, that is the point. With the race being this close and all three riders have things going for them and things going against them, it is impossible to predict (besides my crystal ball broke last week, so I can't use it to make predictions). I guess if we just keep naming people, then someone will obviously be right. I spent some time, on the previous article, going over the numbers and why I don't think anyone outside of the top three will win the title, which I think will be the correct prediction on that.

I am of course pulling for Lostroh, for two main reasons. 1) I like and respect the man. I like the technical way he rides bulls, I like what he stands for, inside and outside the arena. I have gotten to know him and have had several personal conversations with him and like his approach to life in general, not just bull riding. 2) Since my wife is a big Kody fan and we will be at the awards dinner, after the finals, she will be very excited (which is an understatement) and the rest of our Vegas trip will be better. (just kidding......no, really I am serious..... no, just kidding)

    Keith Ryan Cartwright

Just got a Dish network hooked up and I will enjoy some good rides, some great rides, and some bad ones too, some upsets and we all know that injuries will always have a play in it to, (I hope not) but eventually yes, and pressure will make a person lose all concentrations, nervousness will alway linger,..alot will be going on at the same time with fan zone, meet ' greet etc., and all the distractions,..side shows, etc. so may the rider with the most rides, great score be the victor,..

    louisiana fan,
Yes, it would count as far as money won and they could essentially win the average if they got to compete in enough rounds. The only difference is that alternates are not considered to have officially qualified in the Top 40.

    sixdaddy,
As he previously said, Brian Canter is going to compete in the Finals. You can listen to his Podcast I recorded this past weekend and Ty Murray mentions him in a Podcast as well as in his weekly blog.

    pbrfan??,
If your prediction holds true I would likely be a slave to the keyboard for 10 days trying to makes sense of that in a never-ending series of Web features. I agree with in that any one of your four !@#umptions could very well come true, but for all four to happen would take some doing. I guess, we'll all find out in the next couple weeks.
  • louisiana fan
    October 22, 2009
If Mike White or any of the other alternates get a chance to ride it will count for
something. If they are in the money for that round they can pickup some cash. I think
an injured rider should consider the overall cost to his health before deciding to
ride injured. Some things are better left to another day.
I hope PBRFan,I think you have your men out of order, J.B.Mauney will not be that far
    down on anyones list.

Zack Brown will win or Marchi for a bak 2 bak,...
K.Lostroh- will wind up in 3,4 position,
J.B Mauney will go down to -5 to 7 ,......

Don't ask for analysis or numbers, but that's what might, yes might happen.

KRC: Thanks for the additional information on the draft/draw situation. I see webpbr's point, though...the article on this page still says that "first seven rounds feature the top 40 riders randomly matched against the sport’s toughest bulls," which was the initial cause of our confusion. I appreciate your responsiveness to our questions, though!
  • alade3746
    October 22, 2009
Keith: While I appreciate your message to "clear it up" for me, I am fully aware of the standings and how the alternates work. Been a fan for a loooooong time. My point being, as a Mike White fan, is that he is going to the Finals - period. Sure, he might not get the chance to ride and it won't count for anything but he will be there. And that's better than nothing!!
  • Keith Ryan Cartwright
    October 22, 2009
Just to clear up one other issue...

Unlike BFTS events the final round in Vegas is not a draft. The 15 short go bulls are randomly drawn and slotted 1 through 15. Then the cowboys are slotted into their respective spots based on their average through the first seven rounds.
  • ojbramey
    October 21, 2009
I am glad Mike White will get to be an alternate. At least he will get to be there and that will be good for Chris Shivers. We will greatly miss Matt Bohan and Brendan Clark. Maybe they can heal from injuries and be ready for the new season. Good luck to all.
  • Keith Ryan Cartwright
    October 21, 2009
    alade3746,

Mike White will be in Las Vegas as an alternate, which is a good thing because his presence is sure to be felt. However, just to be clear, he will only compete if four riders go down with injuries or cannot continuing competing for one reason or another. And in terms of the total number of career Finals he has qualified for 2009 will not count toward that total.

    KRC
  • alade3746

Mike White DID make it. He's going to the Finals as an alternate but he is going. That's whats important to all of us Mike White fans!

    October 21, 2009
I am excited to see what happens this year! I am not sure I like the draft ( too easy for riders to choose bulls they think they can ride). Yes, bring back the top 45. Looking forward to attending ag events in 2010! GOOD LUCK to all!
  • webpbr
    October 21, 2009
If you go to the "2009 World Finals" tag at the top right of the page, then go to draft/draw on the left, they have now changed that to show "draw" on round 4. However, either way you look at it, that means 2 rounds of draw and possible 6 rounds of draft. Certainly not what the above article says.
  • KechinYerEye
    October 21, 2009
    KRC
Someone from the PBR might want to take a look at the activities page of the Finals.
For round 4, it clearly states "4th round draft - Mandalay Bay Fan Zone & Marketplace."

  • Twiggy
    October 21, 2009
Ok, from my limited knowledge of how it's going to work, the first round will be a true Draw.
I don't know if it's going to be a computer thing or if the riders are truly going to "draw"
from a hat. But my guess is it's some form of the later, as they are holding it downtown on
    Fremont Street.

Not a quote from me by any means, but I'm pretty sure all of the remaining rounds will be via
Draft. That is what I hear, and that's what the activities page says as well.

I have mixed emotions on the draft. There are aspects I really like, and some that I don't
care for as much. I think it might help a little in the inspiration department with the
riders. You dang sure don't want to fall off and get stuck with the left overs....but then
again, Cody Lambert won't be bringing any bulls to the finals that I would consider left overs.

    Twiggy

  • Keith Ryan Cartwright
    October 21, 2009
Round 1 is a random draw and there is a draft-like, pre-Finals event Thursday night on Freemont Street in which each of the guys will talk about their opening round match up.

Round 2 and 3 will feature a draft.

Round 4 is another random draw.

    Round 5, 6 and 7 will feature a draft.

And, finally, Round 8 will be a random draw featuring the Top 15 riders in the average.
  • webpbr
    October 21, 2009
According to the finals schedule, the 1st round will be a draw. All other rounds from 2-7 and the championship round will be a draft. So, the sentence from this article "The first seven rounds feature the top 40 riders randomly matched against the sport’s toughest bulls.", seems to be incorrect.

Looking forward to the finals, I wish I could be there is person. I am bummed about Ryan Dirteater's injury but glad that Elliot Jacoby will be there. What I really want to see it Marchi with his second championship -Go marchi!!

If this will be a finals where they draw there bulls then why is the activities on the finals page showing a draft for each of the last 4 days. I did not check the other days since I won't be there for that.

Mike White did not make it. He will only ride if 3-4 others are injured & unable to ride.

louisiana fan: I was just about to comment on that! I'm glad to see some random draws, though I'm surprised that it sounds like there will be no draft in any of the long rounds. And I am definitely with you on praying for a safe finals for all our riders (and bull fighters). The worst thing about this sport for me is watching so many riders go through such painful injuries.

I'm curious...if one of the international qualifiers breaks into the top 40 in the world standings during the first weekend, do they take the place of a BFTS rider? Or would there be 41 cowboys competing during the second weekend?

If I understood correctly, not every round will be draft, if so I am glad. I feel it should
be more even playing ground for all riders not just the ones that finished at the top of a
a round and they get first choice of the bulls. I am glad to see Mike White made it. Good
luck to all riders I hope win or lose they can say they did their personal best and be
happy with the results, most of all I pray for their safety.
